"The Lord's gotten you this far, He'll take care of you the rest of the way."
These words glowed from the page of Frank Peretti's, This Present Darkness, to warm me with a much-needed burst of spiritual strength. No matter what path we're on, no matter how difficult the road has been, there's no question that whatever progress we have made is due to God's strength and guidance. Hindsight shows us that each trial we endure can work good in the world and in our lives, and after every such trial, we know that God was with us. We know that He has always been with us.
So if God has brought us this far, over the mountains we've scaled, through the valleys we've walked, across the rivers we've forded, why should we doubt that He will do anything less on the rest of our journey?
It reminds me of the Israelites. In the book of Exodus, the children of Israel witnessed God's power in awe-inspiring, jaw-dropping, earth-shattering ways. They saw the Red Sea part for them, they saw miraculous plagues strike their enemies and pave their way to freedom, they saw mountains burn and tremble, they saw God in a cloud, pointing the way like the tireless guide He is. God's provision for them was astounding. And yet, with each new trial, they doubted. Just like us.
What will I do? I can't handle this. What if something happens? How am I supposed to deal with this? Why is this happening? Where do I turn? I should have stayed where I was. Now what am I supposed to do?
We may not always think of it as a lack of faith—anxiety and fear are very human reactions. But after all we've been through, all that God has brought us through, why do we still doubt that He can guide and strengthen us, exactly as He has so far?
God has done miraculous, marvellous, incredible things in our lives! It's time to look back on the path we've walked, to realize how very far He has brought us, and to look to the future with confidence that He will go on caring for us the rest of the way.
